Greens Senator and spokesperson for Multiculturalism, Richard Di Natale, is calling for Tony Abbott to take urgent action in response to Senator Cory Bernardi’s most recent indiscretion.
Senator Bernardi has admitted that he offered to provide assistance to Geert Wilders, a known extremist who expresses anti-Muslim and anti-immigration sentiments.
“This is inconsistent with the expectations the community have of their representatives,” said Senator Di Natale.
Senator Bernardi has form in this area and has expressed similar views in the past. On the last occasion, Tony Abbott stated “If he does it again, watch this space.”
“Now is the time for Abbott to be true to his word and to take action on Senator Bernardi,” said Senator Di Natale.
“Australian politicians should never give a platform to the hateful, extremist and divisive views of Mr Wilders and his ilk.”
“Multiculturalism is one of this country’s great successes and it must be defended. The question is whether Tony Abbott is prepared to defend it from those in his ranks.”
