In the face of a likely campaign by the AFL against poker machine reform, Greens’ spokesperson for sport and gambling, Senator Richard Di Natale, has called on the AFL Players Association and individual clubs to show leadership.
“The likely campaign by the AFL and clubs against poker machine reform is a betrayal of its fans,” said the Senator
“Poker machines are the real footy tax, taking most of their revenue from the battlers who are the heart and soul of the competition.”
The Senator called on the players association and club presidents to buck the AFL and support pokies reform.
“The AFL Players Association should be applauded for its work in youth homelessness but their work is undermined if we do not address problem gambling.”
“The Geelong club president has already indicated support for pokies reform. We call on the other presidents to do the same, rather than follow Eddie Maguire’s greed.”
“In football, September is a time when real leaders stand up. Players and clubs now have the opportunity to stand up when it really counts.”
