The decision of the MCG Trust to stop advertising live gambling odds at the grounds during football matches is a big step forward for community values, Australian Greens spokesperson for sport Senator Richard Di Natale said today.
“This is a great decision by the MCG Trust, and we congratulate them for putting kids ahead of gambling profits,” Senator Di Natale said.
“There is a growing but unhealthy culture of gambling in AFL football.
“Kids should be able to watch a game of footy without being constantly bombarded by gambling odds.
“The AFL now needs to demonstrate the same kind of leadership, and extend this decision to all other venues, including the Docklands Stadium.
“We are also calling for leadership on the issue of exotic bets, which leave sporting codes open to corruption – we’ve already seen sportspeople from different codes get into serious trouble due to this form of betting.
“Aussie Rules matches should be family-friendly events, and this decision by the MCG Trust to stop promoting gambling odds at football games is an important first step.”
