Australians reject scrapping of race-hate law: Greens

Media Release
Richard Di Natale 14 Apr 2014

The Greens spokesperson for Multiculturalism, Senator Richard Di Natale, today has again called on the Abbott government to drop its ill-conceived plans to wind back laws that prohibit racial abuse in light of a Nielsen poll that shows the reform has been overwhelmingly rejected by the electorate.

“Today’s poll shows that the Government’s plan to scrap laws that protect people from offensive and hurtful racial abuse is deeply unpopular. Nine in 10 Australians want to keep the current protections.

“This is a reform aimed solely at pleasing a small group of Government-friendly shock jocks. The rest of the country are appalled at the idea of giving a green light to bigotry.

“Instead of saying that everybody has a right to be a bigot, the Government should be sending the opposite message, that bigotry is unwelcome in Australia. That’s the message Australians clearly want to hear.”
